The verdict/Hidden gem·Chill·Locals + tourists

A small-scale, owner-led farm in Kealakekua where Scott and Terri provide a personal touch that you won't find at the larger operations. It's genuinely good for those who want a deep dive into the same-acreage farming process and a free, owner-led tour of the rows. If you're looking for a polished, high-volume tasting room with a full cafe menu, this is a different kind of visit—this is a working farm experience.

The story

If the bean isn't exceptional, then the coffee won't be either. But, exceptional beans don't just grow on their own -- they need attention and care. At Carta Coffee, we believe that care begins first with the nurturing of the soil, then the plants and cherries and then the beans. From our farm to your cup. We harvest our beans from our mixed-elevation, sloping 6-acre farm, called Nolyssa Farm, in the Kealakekua district of Kona. We also source beans from select small and sustainably-minded farms in Kona.

Common questions

Visiting Carta Coffee

What are Carta Coffee's hours, and are they open on weekends?

Carta Coffee is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and is closed on Sundays. Because it's a working farm rather than a full café, it's worth calling ahead or checking their website before visiting on a Saturday.

Do they offer farm tours, and how do I book one?

Yes, farm tours and tasting events are available by appointment at Nolyssa Farm in Kealakekua. You can schedule a visit through their tours page at cartacoffee.com/pages/tours.

Can I buy beans at Carta Coffee and have them shipped to the mainland?

Carta Coffee ships beans directly, so you can order their 100% Kona coffee online even after your visit. Their website is cartacoffee.com.

Is Carta Coffee a café with a full menu, or more of a farm experience?

It's primarily a working farm, not a polished tasting room with a café menu. Expect a personal, hands-on visit rather than a lineup of espresso drinks—this is best suited for visitors who want a genuine farm-to-cup experience.

What makes Carta Coffee different from other Kona coffee stops?

Founder Scott Burr brings a winemaker's approach to cultivation, growing 100% Kona coffee on their own 6-acre Nolyssa Farm and hand-harvesting and small-batch roasting each lot. The emphasis on terroir and viticulture-style precision sets it apart from larger Kona operations.

What roasts does Carta Coffee offer?

Their lineup includes the founder's signature Captain's Roast and the Latitude Natural Process, among others. All coffees are 100% Kona, sourced from Nolyssa Farm and select nearby sustainable farms.
