The story

This page was built from public sources. Farm owners: if anything here is inaccurate, email contact@islandandpine.com and we will fix it quickly.

In 2002, we (Lee and Karen Paterson) decided to grow Kona Coffee. We bought an 11-acre cow pasture in Kona. We set a reach goal to create one of the ten best coffees in the world. We started by hiring a local agronomist who had an outstanding reputation for planning Kona Coffee plantations. With his help we bulldozed the property and planted 7000 coffee trees. In September 2008, we bought a 20-acre pasture at 2500 feet on the slope of the Hualalai Volcano. Instead of planting the same coffee as at our lower farm, we decided to find trees that produced world-class coffees in other countries. We spent a year tasting different varieties of coffee. After we picked five coffee varieties we wanted, we found the trees at the Honolulu research station. We went to the station, picked ripe beans, brought them back, and planted 15,000 grow bags. A year later we planted the seedling trees.

Founded in the early 2000s by Karen and Lee Paterson, who transitioned the farm into a specialty-coffee focused estate.

Among the first Kona farms to seriously pursue Geisha and other rare varietals, helping redefine what Hawaiian coffee could be at the specialty tier.

Situated on the slopes of Hualalai in Holualoa, at an elevation that favors slow cherry maturation.

Common questions

Visiting Hula Daddy Kona Coffee

What are Hula Daddy Kona Coffee's hours?

Hula Daddy is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The farm is closed on Saturday and Sunday, so plan your visit for a weekday.

Do they offer farm tours, and what do they cost?

Yes, Hula Daddy offers plantation tours that walk you through the full seed-to-cup process on the slopes of Hualalai. Tours are $35 per person; details and booking are available at huladaddy.com.

What makes Hula Daddy different from other Kona coffee farms?

Hula Daddy is a true estate operation — they grow, pick, process, and roast all their own 100% Kona beans on their 11-acre farm. They're particularly known for rare varietals like Geisha and for small-batch roasting by award-winning roaster Laura Ross.

Can I buy beans and have them shipped to the mainland?

Yes, Hula Daddy ships beans directly, so you can order after your visit or skip the trip entirely. Check huladaddy.com for current offerings and shipping options.

Is Hula Daddy a good drop-in stop, or do I need to plan ahead?

It's best treated as a planned outing. Hours are limited to weekday mornings and early afternoons, and the experience centers on a ticketed farm tour rather than a casual café stop. Calling or booking online before you go is recommended.

Where exactly is Hula Daddy located, and is parking available?

The farm is at 74-4944 Mamalahoa Hwy in Holualoa on the Big Island, on the slopes of Hualalai above Kailua-Kona. On-site parking is typical for farm properties along Mamalahoa Hwy; check their website or call ahead if you have specific accessibility needs.
