A deep dive into the agricultural side of Kona, where the focus is on the bean-to-bar process of cacao and coffee. It's genuinely good for those who want an immersive, high-energy tour guide who blends agricultural science with a bit of stand-up comedy. If you're looking for a quiet, meditative farm walk or a strictly professional, academic tour, you might find the vibe here too loud for your taste.

Hale Kokoleka, meaning House of Chocolate in Hawaiian, is set to become the flagship location of Puna Chocolate Company. This nearly 80-year-old building has a rich history, serving the Kainaliu community at the entrance of Southern Kona in in various capacities, from a theater rehearsal space to a car repair garage. The true gem of the Hale Cocoa is the 14 acres of farmland in the back, which we have transformed into an 8-acre park for guests to explore Hawaiian agriculture and island plants.

Visiting Puna Chocolate Company Farm - Kona Cocoa & Coffee Orchard Tours (by reservation only)
How do I visit the Puna Chocolate Company Farm, and when is it open?
Visits are by reservation only with tours starting in a 9:00–9:30 AM window on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The farm is closed Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Book in advance through donkeymillchocolate.com.
What does the farm tour include?
Tours cover the farm-to-bar journey, including picking cocoa pods, observing fermentation and drying stages for cacao and coffee, and a curated tasting of 5–7 chocolates sourced from different Big Island regions. The farm also grows locally grown Kona coffee and macadamia nuts alongside approximately 600 cocoa trees.
Is this mainly a chocolate tour, or does it cover coffee too?
Both crops are part of the experience — the farm cultivates cacao, locally grown Kona coffee, and macadamia nuts, and the guided tour addresses all three. Check donkeymillchocolate.com for the latest details on any dedicated coffee cupping options.
What tour formats are available, and how long do they run?
Two main tour styles are offered: 'The Stroll' and the more active 'The Hike,' with durations of approximately one hour or two hours. A Gourmet Luncheon add-on is also available. See donkeymillchocolate.com for current pricing and availability.
Can I buy chocolate or coffee to take home after the tour?
The tour concludes with a curated tasting of 5–7 chocolates sourced from different Big Island regions, so samples are part of the experience. Whether additional chocolate or coffee is available for retail purchase or shipment is not confirmed in their available information; check donkeymillchocolate.com for current options.
Where is the farm located, and how do I get there?
The farm is at 78-6537 1 Rd, Holualoa, HI, in the Kona district of the Big Island. Because it operates by reservation only with a narrow morning start window, confirm your booking well in advance of your trip.
