The verdict/Visitor classic·Bustling·Tourists

Kona Joe is a high-visibility farm visit that pairs a stunning panoramic ocean view with a unique trellis-grown coffee experience. It's genuinely good for those who want a polished, accessible tour—including a free self-guided option—and a place to sit and watch whales from the terrace. If you're looking for an intimate, owner-led farm walk or a low-key neighborhood cafe, this is a bit too polished for that vibe; head to a smaller family-run plot instead.

The story

Joe Alban is your average Joe. He traveled to Hawaii, fell in love with his wife, Deepa-Tiare, and planted a coffee garden. Now he makes the richest, most progressive Kona Coffee on the islands. Together they nurtured their garden and it grew and grew as did their love for each other. From Deepa: For seven years, I was happily married to Joe Alban, an orthopedic surgeon, when one day in 1994, I found myself owning a Kona coffee farm with him. Here at our 20-acre farm where the world's first trellis coffee is produced, suddenly every day became a Monday!

Common questions

Visiting Kona Joe Coffee LLC

What makes Kona Joe Coffee different from other Kona farms?

Kona Joe uses a patented trellis system — the first of its kind in the world — that trains coffee trees along wire supports on the slope of Mauna Loa, similar to fine viticulture. The method promotes uniform ripeness across the estate and contributes to a distinctively rich and complex flavor profile in their 100% pure estate Kona beans.

Are tours available at Kona Joe and how much do they cost?

Yes, guided tours are $30 per person and cover the full journey from cultivation and processing through roasting and packaging — including the option to roast your own beans. A self-guided option is also available for those who prefer to explore at their own pace.

What are Kona Joe's hours and is it open every day?

Kona Joe Coffee is open daily, Monday through Sunday, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Is there parking at Kona Joe Coffee?

Yes, free on-site parking is available along Mamalahoa Highway in Kealakekua, making it an easy stop on the southern Kona coast.

Can I buy Kona Joe beans and ship them to the mainland?

Kona Joe sells 100% pure estate Kona coffee grown on their Mamalahoa Highway farm. Shipping availability to the mainland is not listed in their current information — visit konajoe.com for online ordering options.

Is the scenery at Kona Joe worth the visit on its own?

The farm sits on the slopes of Mauna Loa with a panoramic view of the ocean below. During whale season, typically November through May, it's possible to spot humpback whales from the terrace.
