The verdict/Hidden gem·Chill·Tourists

A quintessential micro-producer experience where you'll find Ed, the owner-farmer, personally brewing pour-overs and sharing the grit of organic farming. It's genuinely good for those who want an intimate, owner-led tasting and a walk through a working farm without the polished corporate feel. If you're looking for a fancy cafe, a paved road, or a quick drop-in visit without a reservation, this isn't the fit for you.

The story

Welcome to Rooster Farms, a quickly growing tiny organic Hawaiian coffee farm, coop & micro roastery - we also grow organic turmeric ( Olena ), all in South Kona, Hawai'i. A permaculture farm, we grow fresh roots which compliments our coffee, helping it grow better and strengthening the soil's microbiome. A coffee roastery made up of coffee farmers! While Ed is an inventor, Tara an artist and writer, together they have developed the impossible! Being together 25 years, we arrived 9 years ago and embarked on farming, processing and roasting fresh high quality coffee and homesteading our daily life.

Common questions

Visiting Rooster Farms Coffee

What are Rooster Farms' hours, and do I need to book in advance?

Hours vary by day: Monday and Wednesday–Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, Tuesday 8:00 AM–2:00 PM, and Saturday–Sunday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. Farm visits can be booked at roosterfarmshop.com/farm-visits; dropping in without a reservation isn't recommended.

Do they offer farm tours?

Yes, Rooster Farms offers farm visits with an intimate, owner-led experience. Details and booking are available at roosterfarmshop.com/farm-visits.

What makes Rooster Farms coffee stand out?

Rooster Farms stewards what is described as the oldest certified organic farm in Hawai'i, situated in the volcanic-soil highlands of South Kona. They micro-roast beans fresh to order using a seed-to-cup approach, and the farm is women-owned and disability-owned.

How do I get there, and is parking available?

The farm is on Bruner Road in Captain Cook in South Kona — a rural address, so allow extra time for navigation. Free parking is available on-site once you arrive.

How much do their beans cost, and can they ship to the mainland?

Whole beans are $72 for a 12 oz bag. Rooster Farms ships direct from the farm; see roosterfarmshop.com for current offerings.

What can I expect during a visit?

Visits are intimate and owner-led, with the farmer typically brewing pour-overs and walking guests through the organic growing and micro-roasting process. There is outdoor seating, but the setting is a working farm rather than a polished cafe.
